Types of Cannabis Seeds: Autoflowering, Feminized, and Regular Seeds

Feminized Cannabis Seeds vs. Regular Seeds

When it comes to cannabis seeds, two primary distinctions are feminized and regular seeds. Feminized seeds are bred to produce only female plants, ensuring a higher yield of flowers rich in cannabinoids. On the other hand, regular seeds can give rise to both male and female plants. Growers using regular seeds need to identify and remove male plants to prevent them from pollinating the female plants, which if unsuccessful leads to seed producing flowers instead of potent buds.

Feminized (Photoperiod) vs. Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds

Feminized cannabis seeds can be further categorized into photoperiod and autoflowering seeds. Photoperiod feminized seeds require changes in light cycles to trigger flowering, making them suitable for experienced cultivators looking for more control over the plant. Autoflowering seeds, however, automatically transition from the vegetative to flowering stage based on its age, making them beginner-friendly and indifferent to outside sun-hours.

THC Varieties vs. CBD Varieties

Cannabis plants produce many different compounds, with THC and CBD being the most prominent. THC is known for its psychoactive and therapeutic properties, while CBD offers only the therapeutic benefits without the high. High-THC strains may be sought after by those seeking a euphoric experience, while CBD strains are favored for their only health benefits like relaxation or against anxiety.

Choosing the Best Cannabis Strains

Cultivation Experience

Choosing the right cannabis strain depends on your level of cultivation experience. Novice growers may find it beneficial to start with easy-to-grow strains that are resilient to common mistakes. Experienced cultivators, on the other hand, may prefer more unique strains that require more attention but provide more unique flavors, aromas, and effects.

Cannabis Variety Characteristics

Each cannabis strain possesses distinct characteristics, different flavors, growth patterns, and effects. There are three main varieties: Sativa, Indica & Hybrids.

Sativa strains are known for their uplifting and energizing effects, while indica strains provide relaxation and sedation. Hybrid varieties combine the best of both worlds, offering a more balanced experience.

How to Grow Cannabis: Best Practices

Germination

The journey of growing cannabis starts with germination. To give your seeds the optimal start for a healthy life, make sure provide them with the right conditions – warmth (Room Temperature),  moisture, and darkness.

Once the taproot emerges, transplant the seed into a growing medium (soil or plugs) to kickstart the vegetative phase.

Vegetative Phase

During the vegetative phase, cannabis plants focus on building their structure. Provide 18hrs of light or more, nutrients, and a well-ventilated environment to encourage healthy growth. This stage typically lasts 4-6 weeks, depending on the strain and your desired plant size.

Flowering Phase

For photoperiod strains indoors, transitioning to the flowering phase requires adjusting the light cycle to a 12-hour light, 12-hour dark cycle. Outdoors this happens automatically when there is 12 hours of sunlight and 12-hours of darkness. Autoflowering strains will naturally transition to the flowering stage without light manipulation. Monitor nutrient levels, maintain a suitable environment, and be patient as your plants develop buds rich in cannabinoids.

Storage and Preservation of Marijuana Seeds

Preserving the quality of your cannabis seeds is crucial for future cultivation endeavors. Store your seeds in a cool and dark place, away from moisture and fluctuations in temperature. Using airtight containers and desiccants can further enhance longevity.

Legislation and Legal Aspects of Cannabis Cultivation

Before embarking on your cannabis cultivation journey, it is needed for you to understand the legal landscape in your region. Laws regarding cannabis cultivation vary within countries and sometimes regions or states. It is advised before starting your journey to know your local legislation before going ahead.

Frequently Asked Question about Cannabis Seeds

Is it Legal to Buy and Grow Cannabis Seeds?

Cannabis seeds are legal to buy in the UK and EU countries, but home cultivation is permitted (or tolerated) in only a handful of countries. In the USA, the legal status of cannabis is governed by state law. Before buying and growing cannabis seeds, always check the laws in your country or state.

How should I germinate my cannabis seeds?

There are two popular methods to germinate cannabis seeds:

  1. Tissue paper / Cotton Pad method:
    • Take a small plate and layer a base of tissue paper or cotton pads.
    • Moisten the tissue/cotton pad.
    • Place the seeds on top and add another layer over the seeds and moisten it.
    • Run off the excess water and cover the plate, so it’s completely dark & keep the humidity high.
    • Your seeds should germinate within 1 – 4 days. (*Make sure your tissue paper stays moist).
  2. Glass of water method:
    • Drop your cannabis seeds into a glass of water (always avoid using chlorinated water) and place at room temperature in a dark place for up to 24 hours.
    • If they have not germinated in that time, revert to the tissue paper method.
