Attention - Heavily irradiating smoke!
After their big success with Delahaze, breeder Luc from Paradise Seeds strived to create another outstanding haze strain. He was aiming to develop a real haze “bomb”, and this made him think of “Atomical Haze” as a haze strain name suitable for something really explosive. That all took place before the Fukushima catastrophe. Being asked whether he may have thought of changing the name to something non-atomical due to Fukushima, Luc replied: “No, I have not! Atomical Haze refers to powerful in a good sense, to a maximum of joy, nothing bad about that! It has not to do with catastrophes, it has to do with something powerful coming from something small, the power of the atom is positive in itself, the whole of the universe consists of atoms, in essence atoms are building blocks!” Atomical Haze, only available as feminized seeds, was released to the market at the end of 2010 and quickly did arouse the interest of The Doc who has two special cannabis strain penchants: Kush and Haze. He soaks up new promising haze varities like a sponge, trying to get them grown as soon as possible. And with Paradise Seeds strains, he had always gained excellent experience, expecting their new Atomical Haze to be another champion strain as well, and even more so after having read the description. So let’s have a look at its characteristics before getting to the actual grow report. Atomical Haze is an exotic 80:20 sativa/indica three-way hybrid of Original Haze x Indian sativa x Afghani indica. Luc reports: “The result of that breeding combination is devastating and superb in every way. These plants can grow quite tall but not as big and ever continuing as some other Hazes. Plants are actually quite proportioned and make big sized buds covering the branches with medium sized leaves. Harvesting is like picking fruits from a tree, so easy. The Sativa/ Haze trait is dominant. But this combination gives this plants a taste and high superior to most varieties. The flavor when inhaled is typically sweet and sour, similar to the taste of kiwis, with a fine hazy aftertaste in the mouth when exhaled. The souring clear high keeps you awake so it’s best to practice during the day. You will not be able to stop whistling.” With a flowering time of only nine weeks, Atomical Haze is pretty fast for a mostly sativa strain. Outdoors she reaches maturity by the end of October (northern latitudes). For indoor cultivation, Luc recommends: “The plants should be put directly from seed into flowering or when grown a bit longer just a few pots will do with a bit of bending tricks.” Atomical Haze’s THC content is expected to range between 15-18%. Indoors she shall deliver 450 grams of buds per m2, outdoors 700 grams per plant, so she’s a heavy yielding strain as well.
Great top colas
The Doc sowed a package of five feminized Atomical Haze seeds. In less than three days, the sprouted seeds had reached the jiffy pots’ surface, something incredibly fast The Doc had rarely ever experienced before. He followed Luc’s recommendation to induce flowering extremely early, doing so by reducing the daily light period from 18 to 12 hours already one week after they young seedlings had appeared above the surface. In that one week of early vegetative growth, the seedlings had been illuminated with two TLC 150 lights. With the begin of the flowering period, they were transplanted to 11 litre pots and moved into the flowering room that was equipped with two 600 W HPS and one 400 W Osram Son-T plus lamp, already housing some indica strains that had been into flowering for several weeks already.
After one week into flowering, the five Atomical Haze plants showed a uniform compact growth behaviour, having arrived at three internodes. One week later, they were about 10 cm tall, with 5-6 internodes. The Doc reports: “Very nice light green plants. The first true shade leaves are very big, and there are already many side branches on the move. Two of the five plants have somewhat wider leaves than the others. There are no preflowers in sight yet, which makes me believe cannabis plants do have a natural flowering blockade in the first 2-3 weeks when instantly or extremely early exposed to flowering conditions.”
After three weeks in the flowering stage, the first female white hairs had become visible and the plants of course kept on stretching, at the same time expediting their side branch growth. At that point of time, they measured 15-20 cm, still growing homogeneously. After four weeks of flowering, the Doc reported: “Wow, the plants have more than doubled their height within one week, measuring 35-50 cm now! Meanwhile it has turned out there are obviously two slightly different phenotypes, three of the plants are very much on the sativa side, while the other two are also revealing certain signs of indica traits, being lower and more compact than the sativa dominant phenotype, also having wider leaves.”
Atomical Haze buds are very chunky and dense
When five weeks of flowering had passed, the five Atomical Haze plants were exhibiting those first small “rose” flower clusters along the branches. The three sativa phenotype plants (about 90-100 cm tall) were still stretching more than than the other two (about 60-70 cm). One week later, The Doc reported: “Blooming has fully taken over, the buds are busily gaining size and weight. The stretching effect seems to come to an end in the near future. I guess the official flowering time of nine weeks will be exceeded, but if so, it will be due to the flower blockade in the first weeks of the 12/12 light cycle. I removed some of the large fan leaves to give the medium and lower branches and buds more light and thus also blooming power.” After seven weeks into flowering, the five plants had already formed a lot of compact buds including great top colas the size of which was obviously going to become pretty impressive in the end. And also resin production had meanwhile considerably increased, with lots of sparkling trichomes on the calyxes and flower leaves which did effect a strong sweet and fruity scent with some traces of Haze. The stretching had totally come to an end now, with the plants measuring between 80-125 cm. After the next week of flowering, The Doc reported: “The plants are already looking pretty amazing, but I think they are yet to remain in the flowering room for another two weeks at least, as only very little flower hairs have turned brown so far, the blooming power still fully rules.” When the plants had spent 63 days in the flowering stage, he said: “Now the speed of white hairs turning brown has considerably increased, a little bit more than half of the hairs are withered. It really astounds me how fat and dense the Atomical Haze buds have become, I do expect a heavy yield. But I guess it will take at least another week, for some plants even more, to reach the home stretch. By the way, one has to keep an extra eye on proper ventilation and to assure a low air humditiy in the last weeks of flowering, as the Atomical Haze buds are very chunky and dense and could possibly fall victim to mould.”
The two plants of the phenotype that did exhibit somewhat more indica traits – being shorter and having a little lower calyx-to-leaf ratio than the sativa phenotype - were ripe after ten weeks of flowering. The other three followed five days later, after 75 days of flowering. All of the five plants had become highly resinous (“like all that Paradise Seeds Wicked high stuff I have grown over the past ten years”, The Doc noted) and were giving off a very intense, extremely sweet and fruity odour with a slight trace of Haze.
And once again, a Paradise Seeds strain had successfully passed the femi test in The Doc’s grow room, there wasn’t one single male flower in sight. When he had harvested and over three weeks carefully dried (including a slight fermentation) all those lovely big chunky resinous Atomical Haze buds, it turned out they weighed 358 grams altogether, i.e. an average of 71.6 grams per plant, an outstanding achievement for mostly sativa plants that after germination were almost instantly exposed to a flowering light cycle, having spent a super short time of one week in the vegetative stage only. The Doc thought that in his case, with his very high grow room also allowing for very tall plants and an abundance of light power, it would have been better to let them stay in the vegetative stage for two more weeks, then their average yield would surely have easily achieved a three-digit gram amount per plant.
And the Atomical Haze high did take The Doc by storm, proving to be another fantastic experience for him in terms of mighty sativa power and delicious smoke aroma. “It came over me with an express train’s speed, exciting super tingly strong vibrations in both my head and body, a crystally clear stimulative sativa up-high that lasted for hours. If I had been at a party, I certainly could have set my personal permanent dancing record!”, The Doc reported. The buds of the phenotype with a little bit more indica, however, did effect a more complex, extremely potent and wicked high that consisted of a likewise strongly pulsating sativa body effect, combined though with a certain grade of indica stonedness in the head - that was heavily “irradiating” Atomical Haze smoke! A fairly unusual combination of effects, but so much the better for The Doc who quickly got used that initially somewhat irritating state of mind. He did appreciate the fact that Atomical Haze had provided such great two phenotypes, enjoying the slight variation of the final products. The taste of all the five Atomical Haze plants was the same, super sweet and a bit fruity sour, just as described by Paradise Seeds, and it did also include that fine hazey aftertaste on the exhale. The Doc was totally taken with his “radioactive” Atomical Haze, “for sure another terrific haze strain with superb characteristics from the hands of breeder Luc”, he said.
Atomical Haze (only feminized) is available in units of three (38€), five (60€) and ten seeds (110€), certainly a very worthwhile deal for such a high-grade mostly sativa strain.
