Hemp is a herbaceous annual cycle whose height varies between 1.5 and 2 meters , and in some subspecies can be up to 5 m . Presents a long tap root and a stem, erect or branched , resinous with growths , angled , sometimes hollow , especially above the first pair of leaves .The leaves are stalked and have stipules ; each of them is palmata , comprising 5 to 13 lanceolate leaves , in the margin toothed - serrated , with sharp points up to 10 cm long and 1.5 cm wide; in the lower part of the stem the leaves are opposite , in the upper part instead tend to grow alternate , especially after the ninth / tenth node of the plant, or to sexual maturation occurred ( after the initial vegetative phase , known popularly as " doffing " )
