How to Spot (and Stop) a Hermaphrodite Cannabis Plant

A single missed pollen sac can seed your entire crop. When a female plant turns hermaphrodite, sometimes called a “hermie,” it develops male pollen sacs alongside its normal pistils, and once that pollen releases, every other female nearby redirects its energy into producing seeds instead of flower. Catching it early is the difference between pruning off a few branches and losing the harvest.

How to Spot One

Female plants show pistils at the bud site, thin hair-like strands. A hermaphrodite develops pollen sacs too, small round “balls,” sometimes on the same branches as the pistils. Check your plants regularly, especially through the last 3 weeks of vegetative growth and the first 3 weeks of flowering, when hermaphroditism is most likely to show up.

Later in flowering, watch for “bananas”: light green or yellow male stamens pushing out of the bud itself. They’re easy to miss inside dense buds, but they produce pollen just as effectively as a full pollen sac.

What Causes It

  • Genetics. Poorly stabilized feminized seeds are the most common cause. This is exactly why cheap, unstabilized seeds cost more in the long run, our guide on why cheap seeds aren’t worth it covers why. Californian-heritage strains in particular have a stronger reputation for hermaphrodite tendency, worth knowing if you’re picking a strain for a grow where a single seeded plant would be costly.
  • Light stress. Light leaks during the dark period, or an irregular light schedule, are one of the most reliable ways to trigger hermies in photoperiod plants. Our climate troubleshooting guide covers light leaks and light stress fixes in more depth.
  • Temperature stress. Heat spikes and cold snaps both add stress that can push a plant toward hermaphroditism, especially in an attic or unventilated space. See the same climate troubleshooting guide for symptoms and fast fixes.
  • Nutrient and pH stress. Both nutrient deficiency and nutrient burn, plus a pH swing outside the optimal range, add stress that can trigger hermaphroditism. Our nutrient problems guide covers diagnosis and correction.

What to Do When You Spot One

If it’s just a few pollen sacs on lower branches, lollipop pruning them off often solves the problem outright, and it’s worth doing as routine maintenance in late veg anyway. Keep checking afterward: if pollen sacs keep reappearing, remove the plant entirely before it pollinates your other females.

Prevention Beats a Cure

The single biggest lever you control is genetics. Paradise Seeds has been stabilizing feminized genetics in Amsterdam since 1994, precisely because an unstable strain turns every other precaution here into damage control.
